Theresa May A-Z: O is for Oversized Accessories

18.5.17

Go big or go home! Theresa May is a pro at rocking an oversized accessory.

With an impressive collection of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings, the PM mixes up her work wear look with many statement, oversized pieces.

Jazzing up an every day navy suit, Theresa May usually sports a bubblegum sized string of oversized pearls, wearing them to PMQs and official functions. Similarly, the PM wears a gorgeous strand of mixed coloured pearls, all slightly large in size.

Two of May’s most popular and most worn oversized accessories are necklaces. The chunky silver chain and matching bracelet from Amanda Wakeley sold out soon after May wore them on the steps of Downing Street in July 2016. Repeat performances at PMQs and foreign visits made the set a must-own item – and they’re back in stock! May’s other oversized necklace is the blue Balls piece from Mirta Bijoux. The star of the Cabinet’s official photo, the necklace is often worn by May with a sky blue coat and navy shift.

A friend recently met the Prime Minister and helpfully studied her jewellery for me! May’s large, rectangular bangles, depicting famous art prints and abstract patterns appear to be made of Bakelite or a similar material. These appear to be one of her favourite accessories, wearing a patterned bracelet in her official Prime Ministerial portrait and on numerous public appearances.

Not many people could wear such striking jewellery in a confident and chic way, but I could think of no one else who could carry off oversized pieces so well!

Theresa May A-Z: I is for Italian Fashion

11.5.17

Grande! Theresa May is no stranger to looking at Italy for a little style inspiration. One of her most striking pieces- the blue Balls necklace is by the Italian accessories brand Mirta Bijoux. This oversized design is one of Mirta Bijoux’s signature styles, and the PM regularly wears her necklace with a baby blue coat and navy shift dress. She also teamed it with her DvF jacket and jeans for her Conservative Party conference arrival.

The Mirta Bijoux necklace was Theresa May’s statement accessory for her first day as Prime Minister, and it also made a reappearance in the official Cabinet photograph. May last wore the necklace in February 2017 for a summit of EU leaders in Valetta, Malta.

Mirta Bijoux’s creations are dedicated to an audience who choose quality and innovation. As the brand itself says, ‘Our accessory is the wearer: her passions, her creativity and her joy.’ All these characteristics certainly ring true for Theresa May, and her Mirta Bijoux accessory is the ultimate style statement.

Theresa May A-Z: C is for Chains

3.5.17

Theresa May knows an oversized chain makes a chic statement.

May’s most famous chain is the chunky silver necklace and matching bracelet from Amanda Wakeley. Unsurprisingly, this duo quickly sold out after May debuted it in 2016, and there’s been a waiting list for these pieces ever since. I managed to get mine last month, and it was worth the wait! They are real statement pieces, and look great with either a casual outfit or a more formal look. May also owns the Redford Black Leather Shoulder bag by Wakeley, a ladylike handbag with a chunky rose gold chain handle. It’s never far from her side, and has accompanied her from the White House to Westminster.

We’ve also been May debut a plastic oversized ivory chain necklace this year. Teaming it with a classic white shirt and her Vivienne Westwood Blackwatch blazer, this is a cool contemporary look for the PM.

Some might not be able to carry off this rad look, but the PM shows how the right amount of bling can perk up an everyday work wear outfit, bringing a bit of personality and style to proceedings.

Celtic Treasure: Theresa May's Welsh Wardrobe

24.4.17

Much has been made of Theresa May's recent walking holiday to North Wales. It was here that the Prime Minister made up her mind to call a snap General Election, the sights and sounds of this rugged Welsh countryside perhaps helping to focus her mind.

Theresa May was snapped leaving church in Dolgellau on Palm Sunday, the day before having visited Celf Aran Arts, a local arts and crafts centre, packed to the brim with items from small businesses and local entrepreneurs. News reports revealed that the Prime Minister purchased a set of Welsh slate coasters (maybe for her private Number 10 office?) and two rings from Celtic Treasure.

With a range of celtic inspired jewellery designed by Anna Hicks, Mrs May purchased two striking rings at Celf Aran Arts. One was a heavy wire work ring, highly influenced by Iron Age and Celtic designs. The other was a modern piece, its oversized swirl design particularly striking.

Political Style caught up with Anna to find out more about what inspires her designs and the reaction she has had since the Prime Minister debuted her pieces.

How long have you been making jewellery?

I started making jewellery on leaving school at 16. I worked with a self-taught jeweller in Dolgellau on one of the old work schemes for £20 ish a week back in the late 70's. I took over the shop in the early 80's and ran it for 8 years before taking a break to have my sons. I've been making jewellery on and off for 38 years and still look forward to work each day. My jewellery is predominantly gold and silver with, occasionally, some stone setting. I specialise in fine piercing work which particularly suits the Celtic patterns.

Theresa May's swirl ring

Which rings did the Prime Minister purchase and why do you think she picked them?

Theresa May chose one heavy wire work ring, influenced by Celtic and Iron Age designs, and she wore this when she was photographed leaving the church in Dolgellau.

The other design was a modern swirl pattern ring which she wore when she announced the election on Tuesday.

I take a keen interest in Mrs May's jewellery and if I had been asked to choose a couple of my designs for her it would have been the two she chose.

What inspires you in your designs?

I started with Celtic patterns as my first boss taught me this style of work but I also enjoy making more modern, bold designs too. Anything can inspire a piece, from a shape to sometimes just sitting at the bench and playing with some wire and seeing what happens!

What do you think of the PM's style?

Mrs May seems very definite in what she likes and I like the fact that she chooses to wear pieces she likes again and again.

Why do you think the PM and her husband like to visit North Wales?

For anybody that likes walking, and peace and quiet, Snowdonia must be hard to beat. Fabulous scenery and the rugged mountains. I am lucky to have lived here all my life and feel vulnerable when I'm in flat country, without the mountains around me!

What has been the reaction to the PM wearing your designs?

The interest has been wonderful. I still can't quite believe what's happened. The interest generated in the shop where she bought the rings from has been so good for all of us makers. There are 16 of us in total at Celf Aran Arts, making a range of different products, from artwork to ceramics. At the shop we have had newspaper interviews, TV coverage and our Facebook reach has increased by 38,000%!

Happy Weekend!

Happy Weekend everyone! This week has been a funny one for me, giving me time to reflect on things from the past and where the future is headed. Deep thoughts for a Sunday! Amongst the deep thoughts, here are some links that I've checked out.

Happy Weekend! It's hard to imagine that we're at the end of January! Where did the first month of 2016 go? This week has been all about mini battles, and at times has felt like I've been pushing treacle uphill. Still, we got to Friday still alive and having ticked a few big tasks off the to-do list!

Summer Bracelet Stack

13.7.15

For many of us, the different seasons means that we rotate the clothes in our wardrobes. A few tweaks here and there, and voila, you can be set for the new season.

We're well into summer now, and I've found myself mixing up my jewelry due to warmer climes. My treasured pieces do remain, but I've been gravitating towards a fun summer bracelet stack for both work and play.

I love these pieces from Lisa Hoffman Beauty. What makes them extra special is that they're fragrance bracelets, perfect if you're a little scatty like me and forget to spritz on your perfume before heading out the door! I'm wearing the Tuscan Fig and Madagascar Orchid bracelets in the photo- the two scents don't overpower each other, so you can stack away!

I also love my cuff from Dune Jewelry. Dune allows you to personalize your jewels using sand from your favorite beaches, making it a great gift for a friend or family member. I've chosen sand from Newport, RI- it's my happy place.

What's in your summer bracelet stack?

Fashion Spotlight: ASH + AMES

22.12.14

ASH + AMES
If you're looking for some new jewels to start 2015 off with a bang, make sure you take a look at ASH + AMES! Carry on reading for my exclusive interview with Trish and Amy, the brand's creative duo!

ASH+AMES was born from the collaborative vision of two friends, Trisha and Amy, in their continued efforts to help women like themselves live better, more balanced and complete lives.

Together, Trisha & Amy wrote three best-selling books including "I Was A Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids." Their candid, empathetic voice hit a nerve among moms nationwide and led to them being featured on programs such as Oprah, The Today Show and 20/20.

On the heels of that success, the two found themselves asking a question familiar to all women and mothers, "What's my next chapter?" Their answer became ASH + AMES, a brand focused on inspiring women to balance their personal needs with the fulfillment of developing a business of their own, empowering female artisans around the globe and giving back to developing countries.

Tell us about ASH + AMES and the story behind its creation.

We’ve worked together for 10 years and have always been driven by the desire to empower women.  We’ve co-authored three best-selling books (I Was a Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids, Dirty Little Secrets From Otherwise Perfect Moms and I’d Trade My Husband for a Housekeeper), and have Executive Produced a TV show for Lifetime (based on the books).

After that, we asked ourselves the question of ‘what’s our next chapter?’  We weren’t sure – and at the same time had started traveling to Haiti repeatedly to volunteer.  We noticed that female Haitian artisans were creating these gorgeous cuffs out of discarded cow horn, and we bought them for our friends, who also loved them.  That sparked an idea – what if we could launch a luxe jewelry brand that supports female artisans around the globe, while giving back to developing countries?  That’s how ASH + AMES was born.

How is ASH + AMES different to other brands?

We’re the first brand to curate high end, special pieces from female artisans around the globe and offer them to our audience via next gen social retail (Ambassadors around the country who sell ASH + AMES via cocktail parties, pop up boutiques, 1:1 selling).  Our model doesn’t include brick and mortar for a reason; this way, we’re able to better support our Ambassadors and artisans.

Tell us about the inspiration behind your designs and the creative process.

We get inspiration from a lot of different sources – traveling around the globe to spectacular places finding our artisans (from Sri Lanka to Paris to Haiti), living in two fantastic urban cities (Amy’s in New York and Trisha’s in Chicago), even our families.  When we’re together we share our thoughts and start to brainstorm what we want the next season to look like.

What tips can you offer those who are seeking to start a business with a friend?

We were warned not to partner with a good friend many times!  For us, it’s been an amazing journey of growth, learning, mutual respect and creativity.  Our union works because we’re open and honest with each other, and we understand what our strengths and weaknesses are.  We’re almost always instinctually on the same wavelength (most people can’t tell us apart on the phone!) yet our skill sets differ in a truly complimentary way.  It’s a really good marriage.

Who would you love to see wearing one of your designs?

We’re thrilled that Beyonce and Jessica Alba are coveting our pieces!  We continue to get requests for our jewelry from inspirational women who love our mission, which is what makes us happy.

What are you hoping to achieve in 2015?

2015 for us is all about brand awareness – ensuring that women nationwide know who ASH + AMES is, so that we can grow our support of our female artisans and give substantially back to Haiti, our first developing country.

Describe ASH + AMES in three words.

Gorgeous.  Global.  Giving.

Fashion Spotlight: Katherine Jetter

24.11.14

Katherine Jetter
I love looking at gorgeous pieces of jewellery so I'm really glad I've found the designs from Katherine Jetter!

Gemologist and fine jewelry designer Katherine Jetter has made it her personal mission to restore the Australian opal to its rightful place, in the limelight and in the hearts and minds of fine jewelry aficionados everywhere. Distinguishing her work through years of experience, Jetter incorporates the iridescent gemstone of her homeland into stunning one-of-a-kind pieces, paired with other precious stones. Whether working with opals or other bespoke rare gemstones, such as her latest collection of pink diamonds, Jetter moves beyond the classic arrangements, creating sophisticated and fashion-forward pieces.

She comes by her passion naturally. Born in Melbourne, Australia to a Greek-Australian mother and a German father, she spent much of her youth in England, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, and now resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Creative from an early age, young Katherine was awarded the top International Baccalaureate Art Prize for the Northern Hemisphere (2001) while attending SevenOaks School in Kent, UK. Her parents applauded her accomplishment with a small striking blue opal from her homeland for which she created a simple elegant ring setting.  This petite stone started her appreciation of the Australian opal and planted a seed.  She went on to acquire a bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology from University College of London and work in finance at JP Morgan, eventually returning to her roots and her first love, the rare gemstones of her homeland.

Jetter then studied at the renowned Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and became certified as a graduate gemologist and jewelry designer, going on to work for De Beers and other high-end jewelers in Europe and America. The first piece she created after launching Katherine Jetter Ltd. in 2008 was her signature Flower Ring, which she entered into the Couture Design Awards (considered “the Oscars” of the fine jewelry industry). Her nomination there as Best New Designer, led to her line being picked up by Neiman Marcus, who now serves as her exclusive U.S. department store, accompanied by select high-end independent jewelry shops, as well as fine jewelry stores in Russia and China. Since then, the Katherine Jetter collection has grown every year by an astounding 100 percent.

Jetter continues to make time to study the gemology behind the stone. Known as the ambassador of Australian opal in the U.S. Jetter has been going into opal mines since she was 18, earning the trust of the miners to protect the integrity of their treasures.  She has thus been granted unprecedented access to some of the most remarkable opals to come out of Australian mines in recent years including a 306-carat black opal, The Royal One, valued at $3 million. The opal is not just Australia’s national gemstone, she says, it is also an essential part of the collective culture, history and identity of her country.

Jetter has her sights on another spectacular Australian gemstone – as seen with her new Argyle Couture Pink Diamond Collection. Only 12 to 20 pink diamonds one carat or above come out of the Argyle mine each year and it is projected to be completely mined out by 2020, further increasing the stone’s value. Jetter’s designs for this haute couture collection are truly collectors’ items with prices starting just below $100,000.

Indeed Jetter’s jewelry resides in a very unique space.  By incorporating rare gemstones into innovative fine jewelry designs, her work invokes a sophistication that appeals to a discerning clientele.  As this young designer at 31 years of age continues to grow, only time will tell what’s next on her radar of rare, natural stones.
