Pazuki Autumn/Winter 2017

26.10.17

You'll have seen Pazuki mentioned many times on Political Style. It's the Prime Minister's favoured scarf brand, and one which I'm really glad to have been introduced to! It's a great British label, and with the intricate designs based on paintings created by Pazuki's owner, it's no wonder that the scarves are firm favourites of fashionable women across the globe.

Pazuki's AW 17 collection is mainly based on the oil paintings that the brand's owner, Pookie Blezard did last Autumn. Take a look at the website and you'll see that the originals were stuck on the walls for the look book shoot! The colours are particularly warm and earthy with quite an early last century bohemian look.

Pookie is passionate about painting in oils, having not done any since she was at art school, at Camberwell. Since the digital revolution it's been all too easy to use photographic imagery, and anyone can do it. She told me that she is finding it more interesting to create in paint, mixing colours on a palette and using expressive brushstrokes to create an individual and unique work of art.

Pazuki's best selling print has been the Botanical flower print, all the flowers painted in oils and then scattered on a plain ground. The navy version has been the best seller, and the red velvet is also particularly popular.

So what is Pookie's favourite piece in the collection?

"I'm also going to help myself to a navy shirt with bias cut sleeves in velvet!"

These are our favourites from the AW17 collection:

Political Style has teamed up with Pazuki to giveaway the Gravel Navy scarf in model cashmere to one lucky reader.

Fashion Spotlight: Thursday's Child Design

9.10.15

I love to support local designers, and when I met Emma Jones earlier this year I knew you'd want to meet her too! Emma is a freelance designer and maker based in Cardiff. Having studied Costume design and working behind the scenes in television and film for five years, she recently founded Thursday’s Child Design, a clothing and accessories label. Specialising in hand made, short run pieces, Emma's designs are quirky and full of fun!

Check out Emma's insights into the design process and what inspires her. Emma is also giving away one of her clutch bags to a lucky Political Style reader! Read on for the details...

What’s your background in design and fashion?
I actually come from a costume background! I studied Theatre Design at the Royal Welsh College in Cardiff, specialising in costume design and construction, and from there I went on to work on a few different films and TV shows- ranging from Dr. Who to a Mumford and Sons music promo, which gave me the opportunity to travel and have some amazing experiences!

Why did you want to start your own business?
I have loved my career so far, but the creative element is often guided by someone else’s (primarily the Costume Designer’s) vision and ideas. I have always had a million and one things that I have wanted to design and make for myself, so I decided that this would be the year I put those ideas into action! I have always worked freelance so had some idea of what I would be getting into, but taking the plunge felt like a huge step!

Tell us about Thursday's Child Design and why you chose this name!
Thursday’s Child Design is based around handmade clothing and accessories, which are created in limited runs, from materials I have picked up on my travels! A lot of the pieces are one of a kind, made from fabric that I had to buy  when I was in America/Australia/Europe… The element of uniqueness is something that I love about the brand, and where possible I try and make sure I’m using materials that are sustainable- if I’m not using something I bought when travelling, it’s usually something that I have upcycled and printed myself.

The name comes from the fact I was born on a Thursday (surprise!), and was suggested to me by my Mum. She always liked the poem that corresponds to the day a baby was born on, and thought “Thursday’s child has far to go” could be a good omen for the business!

What have been the highlights and challenges?
The highlights were definitely opening my ASOS Marketplace boutique, and hearing customer’s feedback at markets. It’s really rewarding to hear that someone really likes what you have spent a long time designing and making! Another positive is all the lovely people I have met along the way- other people in the same position have been so supportive and forthcoming with helpful advice!
The challenges have included being organised! As a creative person, organisation does not come naturally to me, but I really wish it did!! I’m getting there though… I’ve also found it difficult to be able to spend as much time on the business as I would like to be able to, but I’m hoping one day it will be my full time job!

What advice can you offer those who want to start their own fashion business?
You really have to love what you want to do to make it work. It really helps on the more difficult days to know that you’re doing something you love, despite the day you’re having! I would also recommend maybe doing a short business course so you have an idea of what you need to do. I actually did one with the Prince’s Trust, which was really helpful.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
I currently find it really hard to switch off from the business- I’m constantly thinking about what I want to do and what I need to do! I think because I have taken a hobby and turned it into a business, I have had to find new ways to relax, but going to the gym or just getting out to see friend’s for coffee definitely helps when you need some time out!

Who would be your dream customer?
Florence Welch! I love her eclectic style! Or maybe a store like Anthropologie- I’d love to see Thursday’s Child Design stocked there one day!

What do you want to personally and professionally accomplish in the next year?
I’d love to have more chances to travel, that’s always on my list! In terms of the business, I’d just like to continue growing it and developing my ideas. I’d love to be stocked in more stores across Cardiff and Bristol. One of my main goals is to be able to donate a percentage of the profits to a nominated charity each month, but I’m not quite there yet.

Emma is also giving you a discount code for 20% off any order in her Etsy or ASOS Marketplace stores! The code is LED20 and is valid until 31/12/15. It's the perfect excuse to do your Christmas shopping!

GIVEAWAY | The Reign Effect

6.10.14

Don't we all wish that we had more time in the mornings? I for one hate that feeling of standing in front of my wardrobe and thinking that I don't have anything to wear.

Enter The Reign Effect. It's a new concept in dressing, where a team of stylists create carefully curated style sets each month and select 7 key pieces for you to interchange throughout the month with other clothing options. Utilizing a variety of online stores, The Reign Effect find items that create a polished outfit.

The brand provides 20 outfits/month for Monday-Friday wear, taking the guesswork out of getting dressed in the morning.

I spoke to the company's founders, Cynthia and Natara to find out more. Read my interview with them below and don't forget to enter our giveaway where you can win a season of style sets!

Tell us about the Reign Effect and the concept behind the business.

The Reign Effect is a time saving service for working professionals that is a hybrid of a styling and personal shopping experience.  We provide style sets for Monday through Friday work attire by selecting 7 key pieces to interchange throughout the month with other clothing options.  The 7 key pieces and all suggested items can be purchased with the click of a button that links clients directly to the retailer’s website, which allows for an efficient and curated online shopping experience.  The Reign Effect also offers a customized style set option to a select few each month.  The customized option takes our clients’ look a step further and we create a more personalized look for these clients that incorporates their taste, style, body type and preferences.

How has your previous employment experience aided your tenure at the Reign Effect?

We are actually still both working in corporate America!  Along the way in our corporate journeys we have seen how personal branding through work attire has become even more important over the years for both employers and employees. The ambiguous world of “business casual” can also make it difficult to strike the balance between being professional and expressing your individuality through style.

From a work experience perspective, our backgrounds in accounting and law have definitely helped us with running a company and pursuing our entrepreneurial goals.

What have the highlights and challenges been during your tenure at the Reign Effect?

Our concept is one-of-a-kind and there are no other styling and personal shopping services that target corporate America the way we do and provide this type of service. So it is great being the first to create such a revolutionary service that is much needed by professionals.

We are self-funded and have not received any outside capital so our limited budget can be a challenge.  However, we are proponents of funding your own dreams if at all possible. It allows for more control and forces us to be more creative.

What advice can you offer to women who want to start their own business?

You can’t foresee the details of how things are going to work out or anticipate every potential challenge so just go for it!  After spending time doing the necessary research and planning, overcome doubt and fear and make your dreams a reality.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your careers to date?

The quicker you can evolve when you need to, the longer you will survive and the more likely it is that you will succeed. If something isn’t going the way you want it to go, adapt and find a different way. Also, we’ve learned that not everything is within our control and sometimes you have to live and let go.  Tackle each challenge one at a time so as not to get overwhelmed and have faith that everything will work out for the best.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?

Although our personal time is limited we always make time for our friends and family and try to ensure that it is quality time by being in the moment.  When we work we give it 100% and when we are not working we devote 100% of focus and attention to those who matter most.

What do you think is the biggest issue for women in the workplace?

There are many issues that face women in the work place but one issue that we think is not talked about as often is the lack of value that is attributed to traits that are more typical of women or the fact that while women may have a different negotiating style or way of approaching certain situations doesn’t mean she is any less effective and/or can’t achieve successful results. Also, sometimes the things that women may find interesting are deemed trivial. A woman can be assertive, a great leader, and run a business all while loving fashion and a good manicure; they’re not mutually exclusive.

How has mentorship made a difference in your professional and personal lives?

We have both had great mentors along the way that have helped instill and foster confidence in our abilities to succeed in the corporate environment along with our entrepreneurial ventures. Our mentors have shown us that it’s ok to make mistakes as long as you learn from them and continue to try and give your best effort.

Which other female leaders do you admire and why?

The First Lady Michelle Obama is such an inspiration. She is intelligent, eloquent and elegant; she’s the quintessential woman and all-around amazing human being.  We also admire Hillary Clinton who is another very intelligent woman but also a testament to the value of perseverance.  It’s been amazing to watch her evolve from being a former First Lady who had more of a secondary role to being in the forefront and becoming Secretary of State to potentially running for President.
Another pair of women we admire is Alexis Maybank and Alexandra Wilkis Wilson who are the founders of Gilt Groupe. Their book “By Invitation Only” is a must-read and it’s very inspiring to see two other women pursue and attain their entrepreneurial goals.

What do you want the Reign Effect to accomplish in the next year?

We want everyone who would appreciate our type of service to know about The Reign Effect.  We look forward to companies recommending The Reign Effect to their employees as we become known for being the first and best service that can save professionals time and help ensure they wear stylish and work-appropriate attire as they advance in their careers.

Q&A with Denise Lee, Founder of ALALA + Win $150 Gift Certificate

16.6.14

I'm passionate about supporting emerging fashion brands, and was thrilled when ALALA contacted me!

ALALA is a luxury women's activewear brand with a sophisticated downtown attitude that was created for precisely the way we live today. Taking inspiration from their lives in New York City, ALALA created their line, demanding both the best in fashion and function from your gear.

I spoke to the brand's founder, Denise Lee about ALALA and why she started her own business. Denise is giving one lucky reader the chance to win a $150 gift certificate- click here to enter!

Tell us about Alala- what is the significance of its name?

Alala is a Greek goddess and her name stands for a battle cry. To me, the name Alala is like a call to arms for modern women who want to do it all and have it all.

What are you hoping to achieve with Alala?

We all know that there is so much benefit to being healthy -- in body, mind and spirit. My wish is for Alala to enhance a woman's journey to being the healthiest she chooses to be, by making products that makes her look and feel amazing, in and out of the gym.

How is the brand shaking up the active wear industry?

We've taken a different approach to our designs and branding, and I believe that our customers are responding to the modernity and sophistication of our products and our brand. Our customers love and appreciate our focus on fashion, without sacrificing function, comfort and performance in our pieces.

Why did you want to start your own business?

My parents both work for themselves and I grew up with that same entrepreneurial spirit. I am so lucky to have always had their support and encouragement to go out on my own. After attending business school, I had an amazing experience working for retail visionary, Chris Burch -- helping him build out his portfolio of brands and also investing in young businesses and entrepreneurs. When I had the idea for Alala, I knew that I had the right experience to finally start my own business.

Who would be the dream person you would love to see wearing your products?

My dream is to see women of all shapes and sizes wearing Alala through their daily lives and loving how they look and feel in our clothes.

Do you think there is an expectation for women to look chic whilst they are working out? If so, how can we achieve this?

I truly believe that if you look good working out then you feel better as well. For me, it's a matter of translating your personal style into what you wear to the gym-- choose pieces that suit your personality and your workout! I also love layering with looser pieces that you can throw on before and after a workout to switch up your look. We have a lot of great jackets that are perfect for that.

What advice can you offer women who are looking to start their own business?

Wow - there is so much I could say about this.

Be wise and brave: By being wise I mean, do your research into your idea and make a plan of action for success. Make sure that you understand the risks and prepare for them as much as you can. By being brave I mean, for as much as you plan things out, there will be many times it still feels like you're stepping into something completely unknown. It's scary but you have to take the steps to get to your goal.

Related to this, I would also say -- Know that you're not alone. I have found so much support through my professional and personal networks, many times in unexpected ways. Get over the idea that you can do everything yourself - there are so many people who want to and are able help you, if you only ask them for it.

ALALA

*The giveaway is open to all readers and closes midnight EST on 23rd June 2014*
