In Review: The New Soft War on Women by Caryl Rivers and Rosalind Barnett

5.12.13

As in individual interested in gender issues, it was great to recently receive a copy of The New Soft War on Women, written by Caryl Rivers and Rosalind C. Barnett.

Released earlier this fall, the book debunks gender myths and sheds new light on the advancement of women in the workplace. Whilst many of the facts highlight that women are making gains in the professional world, their progress has stalled. Women are still facing what many have faced before them:

Fewer promotions, criticism for ‘masculine’ leadership traits, being categorized as likeable or competent (but not as both,) and facing harder judgement than men.
Women are still making less than men, and over a lifetime of work, women with bachelor’s degrees are earning a third less than men with the same degree.
Men continue to be promoted on potential, and women on performance.

In the book, Rivers and Barnett argue that the prevalent message in our culture is that women do have it all- and this contributes to a subtle but dangerous soft war on women. In an effort to reverse this trend, the authors argue for a ‘multipronged approach,’ combining the personal, corporate, state and federal levels and for women to understand that despite some positive stories in the media, the second generation bias is taking its toll on opportunities for women.

Perhaps one of the more startling facts is that in countries such as India, 12% of CEO slots at the 250 biggest companies are held by women. This is compared to less than 5% in the US, and indeed, only 6% of CEOs of Fortune 100 companies are women. We see it Congress, where even though women have made grounds, the majority of seats are held by men.

This fascinating book really casts light on some of the most important gender issues of our time, and makes you think about personal experiences and how you can try to make a difference in society. It has renewed my drive for equality, both professionally and personally, and I would really encourage you to pick up a copy and consider the issues for yourself.
