The Wildcards of May: Theresa's rarely seen clothes

13.8.18

We all have our favourite go-to items in our wardrobe, but what about those pieces that don't get a regular outing?

Theresa May's wardrobe is fabulous and well-known, but there are plenty of 'wildcard' items that we've only seen her wear a handful of times.

So which pieces have not seen the light of day since their last outing?

Anya Hindmarch green clutch

We've seen the silver version many times, but this sparkly green glitter coated Valorie clutch from Anya Hindmarch hasn't been seen since! It's perfect for brining an added bit of sparkle to evening political events - bring it back Theresa!

Dolce & Gabbana lace heels

Making their entrance for one night only, the Prime Minister wore these baby blue lace kitten heels from Dolce & Gabbana to the 2016 Pride of Britain Awards. Teaming them with a midnight Amanda Wakeley evening dress, this was one of May's chicest looks.

Perfect for a hot Italian summer, May's budget buy for her Roman holiday in 2017 was the talk of the fashion pages. Whilst also suitable for cooler climbs, we've not seen this since!

Digging deep into the archives, May was last pictured wearing this quirky patent baby blue bow topped heels from LK Bennett on a trip to Cardiff in 2011. I wonder if these are still in the archive?

Hepburn bag in turquoise from Aspinal

And another wildcard piece- May carried this turquoise Hepburn bag from British band Aspinal during 2011. Like the baby blue shoes, it has been relegated to the back of the closet... will we ever see it again?

Theresa May A-Z: X is for Xtra Special

29.5.17

For those extra special occasions, Theresa May really pushes the boat out.

With more black tie functions to attend as Prime Minister, Theresa May turned to old favourites for extra special pieces. Daring, bold and downright fantastic, May wore the sleeveless midnight Luna dress by Amanda Wakeley to the Pride of Britain Awards in October 2016. Causing a little bit of a media storm, May outshone every celebrity attending the Awards with her A-list dress. Cut off above the knee, the dress exudes femininity, with a deep V cut providing a silhouette that only the bravest would wear. May deviated from her usual shoe provider for this special evening, turning to Dolce & Gabbana for a pair of royal blue Bellucci pumps complete with Swarovski detailing. Very chic!

Similarly, May wowed when she addressed the Guildhall in her first Lord Mayor’s Banquet speech in November 2016. Donning a sleeveless slinky red gown, May wore red stiletto heels and a sparkly bangle and Anya Hindmarch clutch bag. A special occasion deserved a special outfit – and May delivered.

For other red carpet events May relied on beloved pieces, such as an Amanda Wakeley jersey dress and the same silver lame clutch by Anya Hindmarch. This just goes to show that once you’ve found that extra special item, you’d be silly to let it go!

Theresa May's fashionably daring week and a new shoe debut

Theresa May rewrote the fashion rules this week stepping out in not one, but two fashionably daring outfits.

On Monday, the Prime Minister attended the Pride of Britain Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, selecting an evening dress like we've never seen before. TM ripped up the rule book for what female politicians 'should' wear, opting for the Luna Midnight Short Dress by her favourite designer, Amanda Wakeley. Crafted from a beautifully weighted techno-cady material, the fit and flare style dress exudes femininity without compromising on a clean and tailored finish. The sculpted waist detail and the deep V cut at the back make this an unique and unusual choice for the PM. The selection of such a dress signifies May's fashion forward thinking and determination to wear pieces which she loves.

With a new gown came a new pair of shoes! Sporting Dolce & Gabbana for the first time, Theresa May chose the blue lace Belucci pumps from the Italian fashion house. Part of the Rainbow Lace collection, the kitten heel shoes are topped with sparkling Swarovski detailing.

The Prime Minister's second 'outside of the box' fashion moment came at Wednesday night's Spectator Awards. Accepting the honour of Politician of the Year, May's wicked sense of humour led her to don a hard hat and hi vis jacket- a not so subtle jab at former Chancellor George Osbourne's commitment to wearing these two safety items! Can you think of any other politician who would be game for that?!

Whilst poles apart, these two fashion moments tell us more about Theresa May's boldness to take risks with her clothes, and importantly, have the last laugh!

It was back to business in between these two moments. May launched the annual Poppy Appeal at Downing Street on Monday morning, wearing a tweed mix jacket, black trousers, oversized white pearl necklace and gold studded loafers from Russell & Bromley to greet veterans.

For the arrival of the Columbian President, Juan Man Santos, the Prime Minister wore a midnight blue shift from Amanda Wakeley, a navy hat and the Edelle Evergreen Tweed Jacket from LK Bennett. The awesome Vivacious block heels from Russell & Bromley made their second public appearance.

For PMQs and the visit of the Columbian President, May wore a navy dress and jacket. Excitingly, she debuted a new shoe from Russell & Bromley - the bronze Twister block heel pumps! Topped with a twisted black velvet bow, they are the ultimate luxe shoe to take from day to night.

Roll on the next prime ministerial fashion forward moment!
