How to be a best dressed politico

3.9.18

Politics is not a 9 to 5 job, and for those of us that work in this ever unpredictable environment, we need a wardrobe that is predictable - and dependable!

I've worked in three different political institutions, with each having a different dress code. The National Assembly for Wales was perhaps the most informal - (you could get away with wearing jeans on a sitting day...) and the US House of Representatives more formal, with staffers opting for smart separates and suits. Parliament is perhaps the best dressed institution I have worked in. Maybe it is the weight of history and the sense of responsibility to dress 'right' - I'm certainly my best dressed when I'm in the Palace!

I have a staple set of items that have become my political uniform. Quality tailored black and navy trousers, a smart blouse/top and a sharp blazer are the items I reach for when getting ready to grace Parliament's hallowed halls. But having a uniform doesn't mean that you have to conform. Every politico needs a signature item in their closet, and for me, my shoes are where I can have some fun and show my personality.

Perhaps it is the influence of Theresa May, but funky flats and statement heels are the talking piece of my wardrobe! Leopard, sparkles and tassels- they're all there! And as our Prime Minister herself has said, "you can be clever and like clothes."

So if you work in politics and are looking for some outfit inspo, check out these top brands...

The Fold

I'm obsessed with The Fold! It's a dream for fans of the nifty blazer. the power dress and knitwear with a twist. It's also a great destination to plot your perfect capsule wardrobe and learn from other women about how they dress for their day jobs in the inspiration Fold London series.

The Le Marais wrap jacket is on my list for autumn - and beyond!

Libby London

Fashion In Parliament: Amber Rudd

31.5.18

Regular readers will know that I follow the Prime Minister's sartorial selections and have become pretty good at predicting what she'll wear - and identifying new pieces!

My work takes me to Parliament, and when I'm not focusing on the day job, I'm closely looking at what our MPs wear. We've some real fashionistas in Westminster- and as the PM says, you can be clever and like clothes!

So, I've decided to take a closer look at what some of our other MPs wear for their day jobs - I'm kicking off the series is Amber Rudd. One of the nicest MPs - she's also got a very enviable wardrobe! Let's take a further look...

Amber Rudd's Parliamentary uniform

  • A long line silhouette, with well-cut jackets in black, midnight and earthy tones.
  • Straight leg trousers, cropped at the ankle.
  • A-line dresses in classic tones, often belted.
  • A rich colour palette of maroon, plum, black and midnight, with the occasional pop of colour - like sunny yellow
  • Statement chunky beaded necklaces, hoop earrings or jewelled drop earrings
  • Bold, fashion focused eyeglasses
  • Block heels, delicate kitten heels and loafers

Favoured brands

LK Bennett: Rudd wears many of their patterned jackets - from a classic short Charlee navy tweed number to longer line coats. One of our favourites is the Cora black cotton mix jacket- a perfect pick for the summer!

The Cora jacket

The Charlee navy jacket, a signature LK Bennett piece

The Edelle tweed jacket

And Rudd also has some LK Bennett shoes in the mix- her Maisy block leopard heels are also a favourite of mine!

Goat: Rudd also has several pieces from Goat in her wardrobe. The Redgrave coat is a classic, and favoured by The Duchess of Cambridge, we can see why Rudd is also a fan! The plum version is probably one of her most worn pieces, and looks great with cropped black trousers and a pair of heels. Whilst no longer available, this is a great investment piece in black, navy or white.

Rudd also turned to Goat for this year's Black and White Ball, wearing the fancy Ezra bead embellished wool crepe top with a pair of great tailored trousers for the event at the Natural History Museum.

Libby London: one of my favourite destinations for a fierce tailored piece, Rudd's colourful shirt dresses are by this great brand. We really love her midnight and yellow dress, and although no longer available, this Lewis dress in navy and pink is a fab alternative.

Rudd also has this fantastic Petworth black and white houndstooth coat in her wardrobe- and the good news is that you can score it on sale!

Anya Hindmarch: a brand also favoured by the Prime Minister, Rudd has a few Anya bags in her wardrobe. The most recent addition was the Vere soft satchel in a nude pebbled leather.

Chloe: the scalloped Lauren shoes by the French brand are liked by bloggers and fashionistas alike, so it's great to see politicians embracing this fab shoe! Rudd has the scalloped block heel in navy and a fashion forward green colour. It goes with everything.

The Chloe doesn't just stop there. Rudd has the Drew bag in a fetching navy suede and a pair of these velvet boots. Rockin'!

Rockoptika: Rudd's eyewear is particularly chic, and her glasses are from the Rockoptika brand. Some snooping has revealed she wears the Columbia II and Buddah styles.

Adidas: MPs need a good pair of trainers whilst running around their constituencies, and Rudd's choice of the Adidas Gazelles is a solid choice.

Russell & Bromley: whilst not an exact match, Rudd's black loafers are spookily similar to those available at Russell & Bromley. Bag yourself a classic pair that will last you for years.
