Politically Speaking: dressing with a message

11.2.19

In an environment where image is everything, what a politician says, does and wears, often makes the headlines.

As a blog that focuses and features 'political style,' my eye is always trained to the subtle (or not so subtle) messaging that a politician might be sharing with what they wear. Are they looking to reinforce a particular policy point or pay homage to the city they are visiting? Or perhaps they even want to cause a little outrage with a jacket or a bag.

Fashion is often called frivolous, but the sartorial selections of our leaders can cause a real impact for the designers, brands and artisans who make creating clothes and accessories their life's work.

From Theresa May to Michelle Obama, here's how to dress with a message.

Theresa May's purple suit

Bold and bright, Theresa May's purple skirt suit is one of our favourites. Handmade by Daniel Blake, the Origami jacket with matching skirt is one that outfit that conveys the PM's strength and power. The poppin' purple hue reminds me of one of the colours in the suffragette palette, including the Votes for Women scarf that hangs in Parliament.

May will often wear this at the dispatch box, giving proceedings a twist of chic and colour. We have seen this look paired with the Kitty velvet kitten heels from Charlotte Olympia, and the oversized Amanda Wakeley chain necklace and bracelet. It's a truly epic look.

May has several tailored items from Daniel Blake in her wardrobe. A uniform that every political woman should aspire too.

Nancy Pelosi and the female Democratic caucus's white pantsuits

Tuning into this year's State of the Union address, you couldn't help but notice a sea of white pantsuits worn by female members of the Democratic caucus. Echoing the message of suffragette's, female members of Congress donned white outfits to send a message to the President- and the viewing public of their refusal to be left out of the administration's policy priorities. Newly elected Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez wore a white cape, and returned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cleverly accessorised her white pantsuit with a red and blue chunky necklace - the colours echoing the American flag.

This is not the first time we have seen female lawmakers don white to make a political point. From using white to support the ERA to Hillary Clinton wearing a sharp white pantsuit to accept the Democratic nomination for President, here's a run down of its historical significance.

Jacinda Ardern's Maori cloak

On her first visit to the UK as New Zealand's Prime Minister, Adern attended CHOGM and a dinner at Buckingham Palace wearing a traditional Maori cloak. Praised as a proud moment for women and Maoris, Adern wore a Kahu huruhuru; a Māori cloak adorned with feathers and bestowed on chiefs and dignitaries to convey prestige, respect and power. On social media in New Zealand the striking image went viral, with many people commenting that the picture captured the inversion of traditional gender roles; a female world leader wearing a powerful cloak while pregnant and representing her country.

Theresa May's red jacket

A small and subtle gesture, Theresa May often wears something red when she is in Wales. At the launch of Women2Win Wales, May selected her red Amanda Wakeley jacket, teaming it with a pair of red patent kitten heels from favoured brand, L.K. Bennett. It's this type of stylish thought that brings a smile to a fashionista's face!

Michelle Obama's Jason Wu inaugural gown

It's hard to believe that this iconic fashion moment was ten years ago. We all waited in anticipation to see if the new First Lady would make a political fashion statement with the choice of her inaugural gown - and she did not disappoint. Obama selected a white silk chiffon off the shoulder gown embellished with organza flowers and Swaorvski crystal embellishments for the round of inaugural balls. Designed by little known designer Jason Wu, the choice conveyed the Obama's message of hope and change- and a fresh start. It's still a classic and can be seen up close in the Smithsonian's Museum of American History.

Amber Rudd's black and white coat

Now, maybe not an immediate or obviously political choice, I did see the parallels in Amber Rudd's black and white piped coat with the uniforms of police officers whilst she was Home Secretary! Plus it's an awfully chic choice to pair with a blouse, trousers and heels.

Theresa May's bee adorned Humbug shoes

We couldn't cover the Prime Minister without mentioning her shoes. May's choice of Russell & Bromley's Humbug shoes for the 2017 Conservative Party Conference earned little coverage  - but eagled eyed Miss Political Style here noticed that they were adorned with sparkling bees. Perhaps it was a subtle nod to the official emblem of the conference's host city, Manchester?

Liz Truss's red dress

Budget Day is truly an exciting one for political geeks like myself, and aside from the fiscal fascination, we couldn't help notice that Liz Truss had selected a rather cool red dress to match the red box of the Chancellor. This particular dress was from Karen Millen - and sold out in rapid time.

Theresa May's white and red ode to Japan

Much like her tribute to Wales, when visiting Japan in 2017, Theresa May selected a red jersey dress and white blazer to meet her Japanese counterpart. True literal dressing!

Theresa May's military inspired Sandhurst outfit

Standing in for the Queen during a passing out parade at Sandhurst in 2017 is perhaps one of Theresa May's most literal message laden fashion moments. From the Military navy coat by Daniel Blake, to the red hat by Liz Felix - this is the ultimate ode to the military uniforms of the cadets.

How to be a best dressed politico

3.9.18

Politics is not a 9 to 5 job, and for those of us that work in this ever unpredictable environment, we need a wardrobe that is predictable - and dependable!

I've worked in three different political institutions, with each having a different dress code. The National Assembly for Wales was perhaps the most informal - (you could get away with wearing jeans on a sitting day...) and the US House of Representatives more formal, with staffers opting for smart separates and suits. Parliament is perhaps the best dressed institution I have worked in. Maybe it is the weight of history and the sense of responsibility to dress 'right' - I'm certainly my best dressed when I'm in the Palace!

I have a staple set of items that have become my political uniform. Quality tailored black and navy trousers, a smart blouse/top and a sharp blazer are the items I reach for when getting ready to grace Parliament's hallowed halls. But having a uniform doesn't mean that you have to conform. Every politico needs a signature item in their closet, and for me, my shoes are where I can have some fun and show my personality.

Perhaps it is the influence of Theresa May, but funky flats and statement heels are the talking piece of my wardrobe! Leopard, sparkles and tassels- they're all there! And as our Prime Minister herself has said, "you can be clever and like clothes."

So if you work in politics and are looking for some outfit inspo, check out these top brands...

Fashion In Parliament: Amber Rudd

31.5.18

Regular readers will know that I follow the Prime Minister's sartorial selections and have become pretty good at predicting what she'll wear - and identifying new pieces!

My work takes me to Parliament, and when I'm not focusing on the day job, I'm closely looking at what our MPs wear. We've some real fashionistas in Westminster- and as the PM says, you can be clever and like clothes!

So, I've decided to take a closer look at what some of our other MPs wear for their day jobs - I'm kicking off the series is Amber Rudd. One of the nicest MPs - she's also got a very enviable wardrobe! Let's take a further look...

Amber Rudd's Parliamentary uniform

  • A long line silhouette, with well-cut jackets in black, midnight and earthy tones.
  • Straight leg trousers, cropped at the ankle.
  • A-line dresses in classic tones, often belted.
  • A rich colour palette of maroon, plum, black and midnight, with the occasional pop of colour - like sunny yellow
  • Statement chunky beaded necklaces, hoop earrings or jewelled drop earrings
  • Bold, fashion focused eyeglasses
  • Block heels, delicate kitten heels and loafers

Favoured brands

LK Bennett: Rudd wears many of their patterned jackets - from a classic short Charlee navy tweed number to longer line coats. One of our favourites is the Cora black cotton mix jacket- a perfect pick for the summer!

The Cora jacket

The Charlee navy jacket, a signature LK Bennett piece

The Edelle tweed jacket

And Rudd also has some LK Bennett shoes in the mix- her Maisy block leopard heels are also a favourite of mine!

Goat: Rudd also has several pieces from Goat in her wardrobe. The Redgrave coat is a classic, and favoured by The Duchess of Cambridge, we can see why Rudd is also a fan! The plum version is probably one of her most worn pieces, and looks great with cropped black trousers and a pair of heels. Whilst no longer available, this is a great investment piece in black, navy or white.

Rudd also turned to Goat for this year's Black and White Ball, wearing the fancy Ezra bead embellished wool crepe top with a pair of great tailored trousers for the event at the Natural History Museum.

Libby London: one of my favourite destinations for a fierce tailored piece, Rudd's colourful shirt dresses are by this great brand. We really love her midnight and yellow dress, and although no longer available, this Lewis dress in navy and pink is a fab alternative.

Rudd also has this fantastic Petworth black and white houndstooth coat in her wardrobe- and the good news is that you can score it on sale!

Anya Hindmarch: a brand also favoured by the Prime Minister, Rudd has a few Anya bags in her wardrobe. The most recent addition was the Vere soft satchel in a nude pebbled leather.

Chloe: the scalloped Lauren shoes by the French brand are liked by bloggers and fashionistas alike, so it's great to see politicians embracing this fab shoe! Rudd has the scalloped block heel in navy and a fashion forward green colour. It goes with everything.

The Chloe doesn't just stop there. Rudd has the Drew bag in a fetching navy suede and a pair of these velvet boots. Rockin'!

Rockoptika: Rudd's eyewear is particularly chic, and her glasses are from the Rockoptika brand. Some snooping has revealed she wears the Columbia II and Buddah styles.

Adidas: MPs need a good pair of trainers whilst running around their constituencies, and Rudd's choice of the Adidas Gazelles is a solid choice.

Russell & Bromley: whilst not an exact match, Rudd's black loafers are spookily similar to those available at Russell & Bromley. Bag yourself a classic pair that will last you for years.

Politically authentic: literal dressing in politics

25.7.17

Politicians are not usually literal and in the age of spin and social media, it can be hard to decipher what is actually being said.

That's why literal dressing is so interesting and a handy way to read the minds and moods of our political figures.

Theresa May is one particular literal dresser. Known for her love of Amanda Wakeley, Escada and Russell & Bromley, May's sophisticated wardrobe can often be very literal. When visiting Wales, May often wears red, the bright hue referencing the fierce flag of the Celtic nation. And on her trips to Scotland, May subtly finds a way to merge the union into her outfit. Her wide ranging repertoire of navy pieces are frequently reserved for appearances as Conservative leader or when she is on the world stage as Prime Minister. The classic colour projects confidence and leadership - she's literally showing that she is in charge.

The bright blue Daniel Blake Orchid jacket and matching skirt is one example of this, and May has worn the suit on her return to Downing Street, for G20 meetings and PMQs. May also wore red and white to welcome the Japanese Prime Minister to Chequers.

May's Amanda Wakeley coat and dress that she wore to enter Downing Street in July 2016 is perhaps one of her most literal outfits, the neon flash of yellow projecting a new, bright change. And more recently, the acid green jacket May teamed with a black, white and green dress to Wimbledon neatly echoed the neat and fresh manicured lawns of the All England Tennis Club.

We also see May go literal in her choice of shoes. The Charlize steel toe pumps from Russell & Bromley were perhaps selected to project strength and her iron will, and the leopard kitten heels to show her fierce sense of style are just two of many examples that spring to mind.

Other politicians have also picked up on the power of literal dressing. Andrea Leadsom often dons a bright blue suit and a magenta top, perhaps a subtle nod to the UK flag. And she recently wore a vivid orange shift dress, with some commenting this was in reference to the recent UK Government agreement with the DUP.

Amber Rudd is also a literal dresser, with her black knee length coat with white piping detail a subtle reference to police uniforms and her responsibility for policing as Home Secretary.

It's not just our politicians who are in on the act. The Duchess of Cambridge is a fan of going literal, wearing a floral Rochas dress to the Chelsea Flower Show and a nautical themed Alexander McQueen dress with epaulettes to a sailing educational centre in Portsmouth. And of course, the Queen has been doing literal dressing for years.

So how can we embrace the literal way of dressing?

  • Pick out subtle references to your destination or event in your outfit. Accessories are an easy and fun way to go with a theme or feeling.
  • Select colours to show favour with your hosts- tapping into national colours is a great way to do this
  • If you're not feeling too brave to be 100% literal, experimenting with nail polish is a fun and cheap way to embrace this trend
  • Christmas is perhaps the best time of year to go literal- go glitzy or go home!
