White House Week

31.5.14

This week at the White House President Obama caught basketballs shot off a hand-built catapult, test drove a remote-controlled search-and-rescue robot, and used his hand to activate an auto-retracting bridge made of Legos – all part of his tour of the 2014 White House Science Fair.

This year’s event brought 100 kids from more than 30 states to participate in a day-long showcase of innovative projects, patent-worthy inventions, and potentially life-saving discoveries made by America’s brightest young minds. The student exhibitors included a young researcher making progress to develop an anti-flu vaccine, an engineer who built an electric car and then raced it in a national competition, a group of girl coders who built an app to help their visually impaired classmate, and multiple teens with patents pending on groundbreaking inventions that could one day save lives.

President Obama also announced the following:

  • A $35 million Department of Education competition to support of the President’s goal to train 100,000 excellent STEM teachers
  • A major expansion of STEM AmeriCorps to provide STEM learning opportunities for 18,000 low-income students this summer
  • A national STEM mentoring effort kicking off in seven cities
  • New steps by leading technology and media companies, non-profits, and others to connect more students to STEM

On Tuesday, the President announced that 22,000 more troops will return home by the end of the year, ending the U.S. combat mission in December 2014.

London Guide: The Cavendish

28.5.14

In a new segment for Political Style, I'll be sharing some of my favourite places to visit, shop, eat and stay in London.

First up, is The Cavendish. This is my favourite place to stay whilst in London, for the location, high quality of service, comfortable rooms and general loveliness!

Located just off Piccadilly on Jermyn Street St James, it has the perfect location for visiting the West End, Westminster, the Royal Parks and is a short cab or tube ride away from locations in Kensington, Knightsbridge and the Embankment. The Cavendish boasts great views of the London skyline- and from many of the rooms you can see the London Eye, Westminster, St Paul's and the Shard. (Ask for a room on a high floor for this great view!)

Check-in is at 3pm and the hotel will ring you if your room is ready beforehand. The rooms are comfortably and tastefully decorated, and have great in-house toiletries (from The White Company,) and a dock for your iPod or iPhone. The rooms are super quiet and cozy and make for a great way to switch off from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The staff are always really friendly and willing to go the extra mile. Plus the hotel now has free wi-fi in all the rooms (hooray!) so for tech addicts like me I am sorted.

So if you're off to London consider staying at The Cavendish for a super stay.

Penarth

The week before last I took a quick walk by the sea in Penarth. It was perfect to experiment with some filters on my iPhone!

Next week, the White House will be filled with robots, science projects, and more. Students from around the country are headed to the 2014 White House Science Fair hosted by President Obama, and we couldn't be more excited.

With students from a broad range of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competitions, this year's Fair will include a specific focus on girls and women who are excelling in STEM and inspiring the next generation with their work. For more details click here.

The latest 'Being Biden was released featuring Officer Peter Laboy from the Alexandria Police Department. Click here to listen.

The First Lady also held the first White House talent show earlier this week, featuring Sarah Jessica Parker.
