Something for the weekend... The Avengers

(Image Copyright Will Kane @ Flickr)

Re-embrace your inner child by re-watching The Avengers! Even though I am in my twenties, and was not born when the programme graced our screens, I am slowly becoming a fan of this classic British comedy-drama.

Whilst the episodes are eccentric and serious at the same time, I am immediately drawn to Steed's sidekick, Emma Peel. Diana Rigg was the perfect person to play the role of Mrs Peel, her  angular cheekbones and ability to fight a man two of her greatest characteristics. I love the fashion of Mrs Peel, with her wardobe designed by John Bates. The angular shifts, catsuits and mix of colors perfectly sum up the 1960s, and the spirit of The Avengers.

Check out the Emma Peel seasons (4&5) available on Amazon: The Avengers - The Complete Emma Peel Megaset (or simply search for the full seasons on Youtube!)

Keep your eyes 'peeled' for a post on The New Avengers very very soon!

The President, First Lady, Vice President and Speaker of the House attended the funeral of civil rights leader, Dorothy Height at Washington's National Cathedral earlier today. Height, who led the National Council for Negro Women for four decades, and was present at the key battles for racial equality since the 1930s, died at age 98 after a lifetime devoted to the fight for equality.

Preview of the Laura Bush Memoir

From UPI.com:

Former first lady Laura Bush, in a new book, goes into detail publicly about her involvement as a teen in a fatal car crash in Texas, The New York Times said.
The newspaper said it had obtained a copy of Bush's book, "Spoken from the Heart," which is scheduled to be released last next month.
The former first lady also discusses politics, criticizing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for calling former President George W. Bush "an incompetent leader" and finding fault with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., for calling for the former president a "loser" and a "liar," the Times said.
"The comments were uncalled for and graceless," Laura Bush writes. "While a president's political opponents, as well as his supporters, are entitled to make what they see as legitimate criticisms, and while our national debates should be spirited, these particular worlds revealed the petty and parochial nature of some who serve in Congress."
The book includes details of the 1963 car crash in which Laura Bush, 17 at the time, ran a stop sign and collided with a car driven by a popular student at her school, Mike Douglas, killing him.
"I was praying that the person in the other car was alive," she wrote. "In my mind, I was calling 'Please, God. Please, God. Please, God,' over and over and over again."
The former first lady said she lost her faith "for many, many years" following the crash.
"It was the first time that I had prayed to God for something, begged him for something, not the simple childhood wishing on a star but humbly begging for another human life," she wrote. "And it was as if no one heard."

Sarah Brown's dash of colour

(Image Copyright: Getty/Reuters)

Sarah Brown's campaigning wardrobe over the past few days has been full of colour. Visiting Westminster Academy on Sunday, Mrs Brown opted for patent cherry red wedges, stylishly paired with navy tights, and a patterned dress. I love little touches like these in an outfit, it makes it playful and unique. Today, Sarah opted for a purple cardigan, and a printed skirt- both equally as trendy.

I also pick up on Mrs B's outfit over the weekend- a printed tee with a blazer and A-line skirt. Fabulous!

Adventures in London

I spent the day in London yesterday, visiting the Grace Kelly exhibition at the V&A in the morning. It was an absolutely beautiful staging of her life, through some of her clothes, starting from 'Actress' and ending in 'Icon.' The costumes from High Society and Rear Window were my favourites, along with her Oscar, Chanel suits, and jewels from Van Cleef & Arpels.

Our chic day continued with lunch on the roof of Harvey Nichols, browsing through their fashion departments and trying on gorgeous shoes. A mosey through Knightsbridge, looking at the delightful houses and architecture concluded our day.
